Life lately... Addressing Recent Events & Our Pumpkin Spice Romper from Puerto Rico

Today's Halloween post is a little more serious, mainly because of life. Honestly, I'm not even sure what to say about the worldly events as of late... other than that I want to continue to spread as much love and happiness as I can.

I don't want to write off the tragedies, because that isn't right -- but I'm also not going to dwell in the dark space that is all of the sadness and craziness happening. We all know the hurt of our country, we all know our world is a crazy place to live in currently...but that's the thing - we all can do something about the state of things. It's not too late.

I'm not saying you should go out and do anything crazy, there's obviously a lot of people who are already doing just that.

I'm saying now is the time to be nice, spread love, and help one another.

One way you can help Vegas is to donate to the Las Vegas Victim's Fund.

Another way to help those in need, is to shop one of our favorite small shops: Charlotte Baby.

 

This Puerto Rico based small shop is ran by a mama and her family and they are lucky enough to be back up and running.

They're so on top of things, they sent over this precious Halloween outfit, inspired by pumpkin spice and we're absolutely gaga over this bewitchingly cute romper!

While those are two monetary ways to help those in need, this isn't all about money. You can still do your part by just being nice to one another, opening a door for a stranger, or maybe even just smiling at someone as they walk by. Every little thing we do matters, so we might as well do nice things for others... right?

DIY The Pout Pout Fish Baby Halloween Costume [Inspired by the Children's Book]

As I mentioned yesterday, we're BIG fans of Halloween... what I didn't mention is we're also pretty big fans of books!

Whenever I was pregnant with D, we would seriously go book hunting at second hand stores, trying to find all the best books to stock up her library... and we also asked for books in place of cards at our baby shower, which rewarded us with quiet the collection!

What's awesome about our hoarding of books other than a plentiful library? Delainey already has a list of favored books and she will grab them and hand them to us, insisting we read them over and over again. I may be making assumptions here, but I think she already has a love for reading... and I'm hopeful it's because we encouraged story time from day one (and even read to her in the womb).

One of her favorite books for us to read to her is The Pout Pout Fish. So when I was brainstorming a list of Halloween costumes we could easily make DIY projects, of course her favorite little fishy friend was one I knew we would have to make come to life.

With that said, this costume is a little more involved than some of the others I'm going to share but definitely not difficult... I will say, the time I spent making this costume was under a couple of hours and the results are epic. So, here it is... I hope this DIY Pout Pout Fish costume spreads the cheery-cheeries around instead of the dreary-wearies, cause it's so cute I couldn't help but smooch, smooch, smoooooochhhhh this sweet little fishy!

For this project you will need:

A decently sized cardboard box
(Amazon Prime Pantry boxes are perfect)

Exacto knife
Scissors
Paint - Blue, White, Purple, Green, Black
Gold glitter (optional)
Purple and Black Felt or Fabric
A baby blue romper from The Baby Bird Boutique

(or something similar)

To get this project started, you'll want to begin by cutting out the tail. I literally just used a pen to make a rough draft shape of his tail and ta-da. It worked out perfectly. Be careful cutting and be sure to try and keep your edges clean and the sides of his tail even.

Next you'll want to break out the paints. Go ahead and paint his tail, I used an overall coat of light blue, then some blue-green, then green, then a few lines of white, etc. Adding a little glitter at one point and then continuing to paint on top of that added the perfect shimmery effect I was looking to create.

After that, I used scrap pieces of cardboard from making the tail and painted eyes, two circles, with little half circles and tiny circles inside - super simple. Followed by little fins!

While all of this was drying, I took the time to cut out some circular spots from the purple fabric I just happened to have laying around - from an old dress of mine! I also cut out THE most important part of the costume - The Pout Pout fish's mouth!

Next I attached everything to our baby blue romper... and this is where I went wrong. I used tape because our Baby Bird Boutique items are coveted pieces of treasure to us - but I know this costume would have held up and been a lot tougher had I used hot glue or even velcro pieces. With that said, tape totally worked, it just also was tempting and way too easy for Delainey to peel off her Pout Pout eyes or spots!

Last but not least, I added a DDBB itty bitty bow to her head piece and secured it to a nylon headband for comfort!

Now my little Pout Pout Fish is ready to take on the sea and maybe get a few more smooches from her Daddy and me.

Super Simple & Sweet Sassy Kitty Cat Costume

This kid.

She started walking today and my mama heart can't even handle it. I'm so excited... seriously overwhelmed with joy. But at the same time I'm thinking... now that she is mobile we're really in for it. Haha.

Seriously though, she isn't scared of anything anymore, especially now that she's conquered walking and she's able to communicate better.

Okay, well maybe she's scared of silly things like the sound one of her stuffed elephants makes or when we disappear from the room for two seconds...

But when we walk through the spooky Halloween aisles in stores she doesn't even bat an eye... she even points, giggles, and talks to the creatures for sale. She's definitely NOT a scaredy cat.

With that knowledge, it probably comes as no surprise that we're all pretty big fans of Halloween in our house... Like really big fans! So we decided instead of just celebrating the creative, costume-filled holiday ONE day, we're going to celebrate all 31 days of October and since she's growing so much and learning something new everyday, it'll be fun to document it all here too.

Today we're starting out with a super simple and sweet sassy kitty cat costume!

All we did was throw on a white onesie after snack time. Then simply taped a felt "fuzzy belly" patch on her, added a pair of black Sew Sassy Capris, paired with her lace black flats, and then added the finishing touches for this sassy cat -  the kitty ears from Target and the sweet little fall bow from Darling Diva Boutique Bows!
